Legendary Race Car Driver Passed Away Sunday At 79

Bill Vukovich II, the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year in 1968, passed away on Sunday.

Vukovich was 79. His death was confirmed Monday evening by Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Twitter.

"Bill Vukovich II, the 1968 #Indy500 Rookie of the Year and a member of one of the race’s most prominent families, died Aug.

20," the IMS Twitter account wrote. "He was 79. Vukovich made 12 Indy 500 starts between 1968-80, with a best result of second in 1973. Goodspeed, racer."

Vukovich was the son of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bill Vukovich and the father of Billy Vukovich III,

both of whom were tragically killed in racing accidents.

Vukovich finished seventh at the 1968 Indy 500, which earned him his Rookie of the Year designation.

It was the first of six top-10 finishes he posted at the prestigious event.
